Language is more than just words — it is a bridge to opportunity, confidence, and connection. Albukhary International University (AIU), through its Sri Lankan Students Association (SLSA) and the Human Resource Management (HRM) Club, demonstrated the transformative power of language by launching the “Fun with English” project at Pertubuhan Jagaan Kasih, Kuala Nerang, Kedah, on 6 September 2025.
This initiative, the first of its kind for the student groups, combined language learning with play and creativity, bringing smiles and confidence to 24 children aged 7–12 from the orphanage.

Learning English Through Playful Activities
English often feels intimidating for children, especially those from underserved backgrounds. To address this, AIU volunteers created a half-day programme that focused on fun, interaction, and confidence-building.
The session featured:
- 🎭 “Name + Action” icebreaker – encouraging self-expression in a playful way.
- 📖 Reading circles and storytelling – building vocabulary and comprehension skills.
- ✍️ Creative writing and drawing exercises – combining imagination with language practice.
- 🎲 Interactive games – such as “Simon Says – English Version,” “Words Whispering,” and “Pass the Ball Q&A,” all designed to make English active, spontaneous, and fun.
These activities gave the children practical opportunities to practice speaking, listening, and teamwork — skills that are often missing in traditional classroom settings.

Beyond Language: Building Confidence and Connection
The programme went beyond language drills. Volunteers and children shared snack and lunch breaks together, creating a relaxed space for bonding.
At the close of the event, each child received a stationery kit, not only as a gift but as a symbol of encouragement to keep learning. The event ended with group photos and heartfelt smiles, marking the beginning of what the organisers hope will be a long-term community outreach tradition.

Why “Fun with English” Matters
The project reflects AIU’s mission to nurture compassionate, socially responsible graduates who extend their knowledge beyond the classroom to empower others.
For the children, it meant more than just learning English — it was about:
- 🌍 Gaining confidence to express themselves in a global language.
- 🤝 Building friendships with university role models.
- 💡 Discovering that learning can be joyful, not stressful.
By merging creativity with education, AIU students have planted seeds of curiosity and confidence that could shape the children’s futures.

Global Relevance of Community-Driven Language Learning
While this initiative took place in Kedah, its message is global: language learning should be accessible, fun, and inclusive. Around the world, millions of children face barriers to learning English due to limited resources. Projects like “Fun with English” demonstrate how youth-driven, community-based programmes can make a real difference.
Such efforts align with international goals for education equity, youth empowerment, and social development. They also show that universities can play a vital role in transforming communities, not only through research and degrees but also through grassroots action and empathy.

Conclusion: A Lasting Impact
The “Fun with English” project is more than a one-day activity. It is a living example of AIU’s values — inspiring minds, empowering communities, and preparing students to be leaders who serve with compassion.
By giving orphanage children the gift of language in a joyful way, AIU students proved that education can be fun, transformative, and deeply human.
