Students from Albukhary International University (AIU) took a meaningful step toward community empowerment with a hands-on engagement programme held yesterday at Pusat Pemulihan Dalam Komuniti (PDK) Telok Chengai.
The initiative was led by students from the School of Business and Social Sciences (SBSS) and the School of Education and Human Sciences (SEHS), in collaboration with the SBSS Student Empowerment and 3ZERO Committee.
The programme forms part of AIU’s broader commitment to the 3ZERO Club, specifically aligning with the Zero Poverty, in which at the heart of the initiative was a practical soap-making workshop, where participants learned to produce eco-friendly dishwashing soap using cost-effective and sustainable methods. The project is being explored for its potential to evolve into a viable social enterprise that could provide long-term income opportunities for the PDK community.
The event brought together students, community members, and university representatives in a spirit of collaboration and mutual learning. It focused on developing practical skills, encouraging social innovation, and fostering economic self-reliance among marginalised groups.
Among those present were Mr. Mohamad Mokhlis Ahmad Fuad, SBSS Deputy Dean, SBSS lecturers Aiman Muqri Ahmad Shukri, Ms. Farah Syazwani Hayrol Aziz, and Ms. Nur Jazanadia Jamaludin. Mr. Masrani from the Albukhary Centre of Excellence for Social Enterprise Development and Innovation (ACE-SEDI) also provided valuable insights into the scalability and sustainability of the soap-making initiative.
The initiative opened new possibilities for sustainable livelihood within the PDK community, with encouraging signs that the soap-making project could evolve into a structured social enterprise. Early discussions point to a scalable model that not only supports income generation but also promotes self-reliance and dignity through skill-based empowerment.
