Albukhary International University (AIU) proudly celebrated Malaysia’s 68th Independence Day with a memorable programme titled “Taste of Merdeka Walk: Langkah Merdeka, Rasa Warisan.” Jointly organised by the AIU Library and the Human Resource Department, the event highlighted Malaysia’s rich cultural heritage while bringing together the university community in a spirit of unity and patriotism.

A Celebration of Unity in Diversity

The Taste of Merdeka Walk brought AIU staff and their families together for a symbolic fun walk across the university grounds. Participants proudly dressed in traditional attire and national colours, showcasing the diversity that represents Malaysia’s multicultural identity.

As the group walked together, they were welcomed by an ambience filled with local heritage elements. Traditional snacks and kuih were served along the way, offering participants an authentic “taste” of Malaysia’s culinary heritage while reinforcing the theme of Rasa Warisan (Flavours of Heritage).

This unique experience blended fun and tradition, reminding participants that Merdeka is not only about historical milestones, but also about preserving culture, fostering unity, and celebrating shared values as Malaysians.

Inspiring Words and Artistic Performances

The programme continued with engaging and thought-provoking sessions. Associate Prof. Dr. Tengku Shahrom delivered an impactful motivational talk titled “Merdekakah Kita?” (Are We Truly Independent?), encouraging the audience to reflect on the meaning of independence in today’s context. His talk invited staff and families to consider how freedom should be celebrated not only as a national achievement but also as a commitment to personal growth, resilience, and social responsibility.

Following this, the crowd was captivated by a powerful Deklamasi Sajak (poetry recital) performed by Madam Hamidah. She presented the poem “Darah yang terpercik di baju” by Norazimah Abu Bakar, a stirring piece that echoed the sacrifices of those who fought for freedom and the values that Malaysians continue to uphold.

These cultural and intellectual highlights added depth to the event, making it not just a celebration but also a moment of reflection and inspiration.

Leadership Message: Building a United Campus Spirit

In his address, Prof. Dr. Hj. Mohamad Abdullah Bin Hemdi, Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic), emphasised the importance of nurturing unity and cultural appreciation within the AIU community. He encouraged staff and students to carry forward the values of togetherness, respect, and responsibility in their daily lives.

He further highlighted that events like Taste of Merdeka Walk play an important role in fostering a strong campus spirit. By appreciating cultural traditions and national values, AIU continues to shape socially responsible graduates who are well-prepared to contribute to society while upholding Malaysia’s identity.

Embodying AIU’s 5A’s Core Values

The Merdeka celebration reflected AIU’s 5A’s Core Values – Adab, Amanah, Amalan, Akidah, and Akhlak – in meaningful ways:

  • Adab (Courtesy): Respecting one another through shared traditions and cultural expressions.
  • Amanah (Trust): Preserving Malaysia’s heritage with sincerity and responsibility.
  • Amalan (Practice): Actively participating in activities that strengthen unity.
  • Akidah (Belief): Embracing the shared faith that binds the community together.
  • Akhlak (Character): Demonstrating noble character and cooperation in building harmony.

Through this celebration, AIU reaffirmed its commitment to fostering not only academic excellence but also moral, cultural, and social values among its community.

A Memorable Merdeka at AIU

The Taste of Merdeka Walk was more than just a walk—it was a symbol of pride, resilience, and unity. By combining heritage, education, and celebration, AIU ensured that the 68th Merdeka Anniversary was marked in a way that resonated deeply with everyone involved.

This celebration reminds the community that Merdeka is not merely a day in history, but a living spirit—one that thrives through togetherness, respect for diversity, and the continuous practice of Malaysia’s cherished traditions.
